Cuban Salsa/Rueda de Casino lesson @7:00

Food and Drinks Included
KFEKONLESHE (pronounced “café con leche”) infuses the traditional Cuban Son with the New York sensibility which the genre spawned in the United States over the past several decades. Popularized in the first quarter of the twentieth century, the Son—with its elegantly simple tonality and driving rhythm, is the foundation for Kfekonleshe, a four-piece combo with the strength and swing of twice as many musicians.

The Schumacher / Sanford Sound Assembly

Schumacher band The Schumacher/Sanford Sound Assembly is a 17-piece collective of New York's finest players featuring the original compositions of David Schumacher and JC Sanford. Disciples of Bob Brookmeyer, Schumacher and Sanford strive for organic structures, extended forms, and motivic development through a colorful palette of orchestration. They intertwine improvised and composed elements in their work to create a natural, seamless evolution of material. It is a combination full of excitement and intrigue that will fulfill the most critical and demanding jazz audience.

Sound Assembly members, including drummer John Hollenbeck (Bob Brookmeyer, Jim McNeely), trumpeter John Bailey (Ray Barretto, Chico O'Farrill), trombonist Mark Patterson (Dave Matthews, Maria Schneider), and reedmen Chris Bacas (Buddy Rich, Artie Shaw), Ben Kono (Freddie Hubbard, Michael Brecker), and John O'Gallagher (Joe Henderson, Kenny Wheeler) bring a vast range of experience to the group. The talents of these members showcase the unmistakable sound, style, and nuance of co-leaders Schumacher and Sanford.

Ismael Garcia

Ismael Garcia"I was born in the port of Alvarado, Veracruz, Mexico on March 12, 1973. I come from a large, humble family composed of ranchers and fishermen. I went to elementary school and studied through high school. While I was in high school, I had an intense love toward music. The music department in my school did not have sufficient instruments and necessary materials to study music properly (like all government schools) and my family did not have money to buy me a guitar. I had to resign to the fact that music would not be a part of me. Seven years later, I started to hang around friends that I never used to previously and I saw they were great musicians. I started to look at this opportunity like no other, and I learned to play the guitar. In 1994, I had composed my first songs. It was very common that during our get-togethers that we would sing the same melodies, and as the stubborn one that I am, I said," Why don't we sing something different and original." From that point on, I dedicated my new talent towards writing when I could. It wasn't sufficient enough, but from there I went to the Cultural Assembly in Alvarado and I learned things that I will never forget, the most important being Latin American Folklore."........

Pablo Mayor Folklore Urbano

Folklore Urbano Folklore Urbano fuses the Afro-Colombian rhythms of Colombia with complex jazz harmonies and form. The result is both groove-oriented and intellectually stimulating. The sound is fresh and features a stellar jazz horn section, a jazz rhythm section, and Colombian folkloric drums.

Ensemble leader, Pablo Mayor, composer, arranger and pianist, was born in Palmira, Colombia, and holds both a B.A. and an M.A. in Jazz Arranging from the University of North Texas. While Professor of Jazz at Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia, in 1998, Mr. Mayor began his personal investigation of the native music of Colombia. Although it will be a lifelong process of discovery, Mr. Mayor has taken his current knowledge of Colombian folklore and combined it with an extensive knowledge of jazz harmonies. Since moving to NYC in 1999, in addition to his Colombian project, Mr. Mayor has been working as both pianist and arranger for Orquesta Broadway and has been an active pianist in the Afro-Cuban scene. He is also an active arranger for Drop 6 Media. Inc., a publishing company based in Denton, TX. WHERE IS HOME? A night of music, dance, and sculpture

El Taller Latinoamericano will be hosting a special cross-fertilization of art, music, and dance.

Where Is Home? will showcase a mother/son collaboration between visual artist Joan Carlon and saxophonist/ composer Paul Carlon. The third element, dance, will be provided in spectacular fashion by world-renowned rumbatap dancer Max Pollak.

Where Is Home? is the name of a series of multimedia sculpture works created by Ms. Carlon revolving around the theme of immigration and the disruption and upheaval caused when people leave their homes in other countries for whatever reason and come to the United States. The work features testimonials of people from all over the world, collected by Carlon and incorporated in various ways into the visual presentation.

The musical suite called Where Is Home? was created by Paul Carlon to express in sound the thematic motive of the visual work. It utilizes kalimba, brass, woodwinds, a vocalist, and a rhythm section, and mixes jazz, Afro-Cuban, and Brazilian influences.

Rumbatap artist Max Pollak will be adding a combination of choreography and freestyle improvisation to the evening to bring the theme to living, breathing, moving life.
