El Taller's Spanish Language School offers high-quality classes at all levels to encourage cross-cultural dialogue in our community. Our conversation-focused Spanish classes have been recognized by the Village Voice, The Daily News, and thousands of satisfied students as among the best and most effective in New York City. Montefiore, Columbia Presbyterian, St. Lukes and New York downtown hospitals as well as Children's Television Workshop and the New York Public Library are among the public service organizations that have entrusted El Taller with the Spanish language training of their staffs.

Our fast learning, conversation-focused Acoustic Method of Spanish Instruction originated by Artistic Director Bernardo Palombo based on his last 30 years of teaching at El Taller and other colleges and universities. This method is unique to El Taller and is developed specifically to teach Spanish to English speakers. It integrates cultural information, artifacts and events into its curriculum and focuses upon Latin America.

Typically, each beginning and intermediate class is divided in two parts: the first half of each class is dedicated to grammar exposition and verb drills in "call and response" format, while the second part focuses on developing conversational ability. Useful idiomatic phrases, a vocabulary of the most-used verbs and Latin American idioms and social customs are emphasized. Sound and dialog are the basis of this method - this gets students communicating in Spanish quicker than they ever thought possible.

El Taller offers Spanish classes at all levels from Beginner to Advanced, at a variety of times and settings: Please pre-register. Space is limited and we cannot guarantee any student a seat without pre-registration.

Special Activities

El Taller's students benefit from a living curriculum including concerts, art exhibits, readings, dance presentations and a variety of other activities that focus on the cultures of Latin America. We offer:

  • Poetry and literature readings
  • A regular schedule of Latin music events
  • Weekend language retreats
  • Latin dance classes, including Salsa, Rueda de Casino and Tango
  • Language study trips to locations in Latin America

A student speaks up....

There is something magical about El Taller. Before you even enter the door your senses are stimulated by the riot of color on the stairs. When I first walked in I had never taken a Spanish class. After only six months I can now understand, read, speak, and sing, well enough to know that I could navigate in any Spanish-speaking country.

How does El Taller do it? The idea that language can be taught as music is the key. I no longer have to think about which tense to use because I can hear the "song" in my head that tells me: Cuando cante, cantaré. Si cantara, cantaría.

It is not just the method of teaching the language that makes El Taller such a special place. It is also the feeling of warmth and acceptance, the feeling that you are being taken to the heart of a loving family. There are so many ways to enjoy El Taller, from language classes to salsa lessons, art exhibits to musical performances. I feel so fortunate to have discovered this extraordinary community.
