What Others
Say About Spanish Classes at El Taller

El Taller in the Blogs.
I thought about writing this entry in Spanish, but I have decided to refrain. Anyway, today was the final day of my morning intensive Spanish class at El Taller Latino (http://www.tallerlatino.org/) at 103rd and Broadway. The class was fantastic. The school offered three levels of Spanish classes during the month of July: Beginner I, Beginner II and Intermediate. I was proud of myself on the first day when my high school Spanish background placed me in Beginner II...

There is something magical about El Taller. Before you even enter the door your senses are stimulated by the riot of color on the stairs. When I first walked in I had never taken a Spanish class. After only six months I can now understand, read, speak, and sing, well enough to know that I could navigate in any Spanish-speaking country.
How does El Taller do it? The idea that language can be taught as music is the key. I no longer have to think about which tense to use because I can hear the "song" in my head that tells me: Cuando cante, cantaré. Si cantara, cantaría.
It is not just the method of teaching the language that makes El Taller such a special place. It is also the feeling of warmth and acceptance, the feeling that you are being taken to the heart of a loving family. There are so many ways to enjoy El Taller, from language classes to salsa lessons, art exhibits to musical performances. I feel so fortunate to have discovered this extraordinary community.

Read about one student's first day in class.
I still remember clearly my first evening class a couple of years ago. I was very excited to be there at El Taller, in the airy, bustling loft, and it was not until I stepped into the classroom that I realized it had been a life-long dream, one that had been denied, or avoided, or forgotten. Finally, I thought, I will learn Spanish! ....»»»» |

I would like to
thank you for the valuable contribution you have made for more
than ten years teaching our faculty and residents. Your Medical
Spanish Course is a unique and integral part of our curriculum,
as is your availability as a faculty resource on culture and
health issues of the Hispanic community.

Thank you......As a teacher myself, I want to tell you
that the Spanish class I took at El Taller was the most
stimulating classroom experience I have had in many years. Your
classes are not just about language, but about culture and
real-life communication.

If you think language is to communicate...... if you think
grammar should help you to understand the language and not
alienate you from it, if, above all, you think language study can
be fun, informal and even irreverent...then you must have studied
at El Taller.

El Taller saved my butt!....The residency (program) sent
me to....Dartmouth for a 10 day immersion Spanish program, but it
was nothing compared to the education I got from you.
