Events at El Taller

Casa de Música | house of music

El Taller has a long history of being the musical home in New York for musicians from all over the Americas. Our Artistic Director Bernardo Palombo is a composer, performer and impresario who has brought some of the greatest names in American music to El Taller including: Mercedes Sosa, Philip Glass, David Byrne, León Gieco, Atahualpa Yupanqui, Grupo Aymara, Conjunto Libre, The Soldier String Quartet, Pete Seeger, Luis Días, and Larry Harlow.

A constant flow of New York's best musicians routinely transform this intimate salon into their performance "laboratory". Just ask Pablo Mayor, The James Begian Big Band, Lucia Pulido or Pedro Giraudo. As Valerie Naranjo tells it, "This is one of the last places in New York where business has not spoiled the music." Our goal is not only to present the best in Latin music, but also to encourage a mixture of musical traditions that results in new creative collaborations and truly new music.

Casa de Arte | house of art

The Grady Alexis Gallery is a space that is open to many forms of art with regular new exhibitions. Since 1979 it has offered curatorial support to known and emerging artists with the only requirement being visual creativity. Many of our exhibited artists are of Latino heritage, and much of the art we exhibit bases itself in Latin American themes. The Gallery considers as part of its mission introducing new artists to the New York scene.

Casa de Idiomas | house of language

El Taller's students benefit from a living curriculum including concerts, art exhibits, readings, dance presentations and a variety of other activities that focus on the cultures of Latin America. Come to one of our Viernes Social conversation nights to engage with members of our community from all over the world in Spanish, English, and many other languages.

Casa de los Niños | house of children

The last Sunday of every month, Rubén González and friends host Cantando en Familia, an interactive, audience participatory bilingual event for children of all ages. The songs make the body move and the mind think. Rubén has been playing and singing music at El Taller since the 80's, honing his music and storytelling skills, and his Cantando events are a joyous occasion for all ages.

Casa del Baile | house of dance

In addition to Saturday Salsa classes, El Taller's House of Dance periodically hosts events in a range of styles, including Tango, Merengue, Bachata, and Afro-Cuban.

Casa de Cine | house of film

El Taller periodically screens films both new and old. Our House of Film was conceived with the goal of developing and producing video work that enhances the community's ability to collectively recognize and respect cultural arts as the ultimate expression of human diversity.
