35 Years Taller Presents: The Resurrection of Victor Jara

El Taller Latino Americano is proud to welcome filmmaker and long time friend, John Summa, to speak and screen selections of his soon-to-be-released feature film, "The Resurrection of Victor Jara" (scheduled for festival release in 2014), including rare footage of Victor Jara performing right before his death in August 1973. Joanne Pottlitzer, who shot the footage of Victor, will make a special appearance to share stories about working with and video-taping Victor. For more information about the film, please visit The Resurrection of Victor Jara.

Victor Jara was at the forefront of a roots music revival during the tumultuous 1960s in Chile and across Latin America. A theater director, musician, activist and teacher, Victor transformed folk music into a revolutionary social movement known as "New Song" (Nueva Cancion). His songs and singing came to embody the hopes and dreams of an entire continent -- a legacy that still resonates today, not just in Latin America, but worldwide.

This feature length film documents the extraordinary life and legacy of iconic Chilean singer-songwriter, Victor Jara, executed in 1973 following a military coup. On one level the film chronicles courageous efforts led by Victor's widow Joan Jara to return the censored singer to cultural life in Chile.

At another level the documentary explores Victor's profound impact on artists, activists and musicians of all ages inside and outside Chile. Overall the film reveals how Victor Jara's life and music continue to inspire new generations.
