John Ehlis

Suggested Donation $15

Guitarist and multi-instrumentalist John Ehlis combines creative forces with trumpeter Thomas Heberer and percussionist David Silliman to illuminate the spirit and energy of music made in the moment. Drawing from Ehlis’s library of original compositions, this trio brings a sense of adventure and wonder to his distinctive and appealing music. As part of the “del Aconcagua a Jayuya" Concert Series, this performance showcases Bernardo Palombo in a new arrangement of Carlos Gardel’s “Silencio,” a poetic depiction of the cycles of life during times of war.

John Ehlis is drawn to traditional and folk music from around the world and has performed with visionary artists ranging from saxophonists Oliver Lake and John Tchicai to vocalists Marie Afonso, Loire Cotler and Olivia Foschi, as well as instrument maker Ken Butler, frame drum master Glen Velez, classical guitarist Philip Hii, singer/songwriter Scott E. Moore, Basque duo Tapia and Leturria, Danish drummer Kresten Osgood, and Finnish saxophonist Mikko Innanen.

German born cornet and trumpet player Thomas Heberer moved to New York City in 2008. He appears on over 50 CDs as a sideman with a dozen CDs under his own leadership. He has worked with Han Bennink, Misha Mengelberg, David Murray, Evan Parker, George Lewis, Elliott Sharp, Alexander v. Schlippenbach, Peter Broetzmann, Dieter Manderscheid, Anthony Braxton, and Steve Lacy.

Drummer and percussionist, David Silliman's middle name should be versatility. His exciting rhythmic energies add color and mood to any musical performance, whether in accompanying song stylists such as Mariah Carey, Cassandra Wilson, and Blossom Dearie, or playing with Colombian Harpist Edmar Castaneda. He has performed in concerts and festivals in Italy, Vienna, Berlin, the North Sea, Monterey, Uruguay, and Lithuania. Highlights of his work includes concert tours with Al DiMeola, Cassandra Wilson, and Leslie Uggams.
