ATU RAM
Earthly Wisdom
This exhibition of Atu Ram’s work focuses on the way he uses color, pattern, and multi-cultural symbols as adages to inspire a transcendent life. For Ram, art is a way to promote healing and positivity through the playful and unexpected layerings of color, the textures of mixed mediums, and form. He has described his work as “a natural experience in art.”
In this small sample of his work, African, Indian, and other indigenous esoteric symbols float or are embedded into his compositions as patterns or embellishments that encourage us to travel along his forms. They add dimension and perspective, both technically and metaphorically. “Be Brave,” “Shaman’s Shoes,” and “Ten Dimensions” are examples of his use of color and pattern that are percussive, while the symbols themselves hold a stillness that, for the artist, points to a way of being.
Atu Ram was born in the Bronx and grew up in Harlem with parents from the South and the Caribbean, who instilled in him a love of nature while exposing him to the multicultural art of Harlem. These influences sparked his curiosity and guided him to develop an inner awareness. His work uses an intuitive terrain of multicultural references in a playful manner that allows him to express his sensitivity to organic balanced symmetry. In some works, one will appreciate his ease in creating abstraction out of common forms, illustrating these forms in ways that are novel and surprising. In others, his approach to color is rhythmic, elegant, and meditative.
