The Grady Alexis Gallery at El Taller Latino Americano is pleased to present “EmPOWER! Images For Social Justice”, a series of artworks created by award-winning artist Andrea Arroyo in response to pressing global topics.
The artworks in EmPOWER! address social justice issues, while honoring the spirit of peaceful, creative political resistance throughout the world.
The exhibition features 30 impactful images addressing current topics, such as immigration, family separations, gun violence, race discrimination, the environmental crisis, Women and LGBTQI issues.
Arroyo’s thought provoking works bring attention to pressing issues while aiming to create a multi-level conversation that bridges art, social justice and community.
Most images have been published (The Nation, The Manhattan Times, Posters for Change, Resist! Viceversa, etc.) and some have been also exhibited internationally. Ms. Arroyo is best know for her lyrical, women-focused paintings and site-specific installations, this is the first time the artist presents a solo exhibition of her political illustrations.
Images include “Me Too” published internationally and awarded First Prize in the United Nations’ Ranan Lurie Political Art Contest, and “Women’s Rights Are Human Rights” awarded the “Political Satire” award at the 2019 Biennial in Cuba.
About the artist: Andrea Arroyo is an award-winning artist working in a range of media including public art, painting, illustration and site-specific installation. Her work is exhibited internationally and is in private, corporate and public collections around the world.
Public art and commissions include projects for New York Restoration Project, El Museo del Barrio, The Morris-Jumel Mansion Museum, the New York Women Foundation, The International Museum of Women, The MTA/New York Subway, The NY School Construction Authority, and The Women’s Rights National Historical Park. Recognitions include New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships, Global Citizen Award Artist, Clinton Global Initiative, 21 Leader for the 21st Century, Official Artist of the Latin Grammy, Outstanding Woman of New York, United Nations Award for Political Art, Cuban Biennial “Political Satire” Award, and multiple awards from the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance, the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone, the Puffin Foundation, the Harlem Arts Alliance and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. Arroyo’s artwork has been published extensively including on the cover of The New Yorker and in The New York Times, The Nation and the International Herald Tribune.
