We are pleased to share that Teatro SEA, Teatro LATEA, and The Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural & Educational Center have recognized Bernardo Palombo and Jennifer Maya Luz Pliego for their contributions to Latino arts and culture.
This posthumous recognition of Bernardo’s work is especially meaningful, reflecting his deep affection and respect for the Puerto Rican community of New York City.
When he arrived in New York at the age of 19, it was the city’s vibrant music, art, poetry, and activism, especially from Puerto Rico, that inspired him to stay rather than continue on to France, as he had originally planned. The sounds of Puerto Rican music became an expansive, joyful education for him. In time, he wove his Argentine rhythms together with Caribbean instruments and influences, creating music that could only have been born in New York.
We know that this acknowledgment of his life’s work is making his spirit soar.
