ARACELI POMA

  • El Taller Latino Americano New York, NY, United States (map)

Araceli Poma is a Peruvian singer, composer, and artist based in New York. A two-time Latin Grammy nominee, she blends Andean and Afro-Peruvian traditions with a contemporary sound. Her songs are a journey through memory, land, and diaspora.

This evening is part of Bernardo Palombo’s vision of the importance of “el canto” throughout the Americas and the way songs play an essential role in the process of “transculturation,” a term coined by the Cuban anthropologist Fernando Ortiz to describe how cultures blend, inform, and transform one another; and how the arts, in particular, shape this exchange into new aesthetic expressions. These connections are especially profound in songs.

Araceli will perform a short selection of songs from her native country, Peru, in an intimate setting designed for a recording that will become part of El Taller’s archive, El Cancionero de las Américas.

She will be joined by Sofía Carrasco, Peruvian saxophonist and visual artist, and Eric Kurimski, an American guitarist with a deep focus on Peruvian music.

LIMITED SEATING: please RSVP at info@talllerlatino.org to reserve a space and for the address of the space on W 116th Street, off Broadway.
