FolkColombia Presents: Riosucio: Homenaje al Carnaval

El Taller Latino Americano is proud to partner with FolkColombia to host: Tertulia y Taller de Riosucio "Homenaje al Carnaval" with Ruben Dario Mejia and Ramiro Antonio Sandoval

The Carnaval de Riosucio (Caldas) is one of the richest and most significant events that takes place every two years. As FolkCOLOMBIA Musica y Danza prepares to pay homage to the carnival during FolkCOLOMBIA en el Parque 2014, Ruben Dario Mejia and Ramiro Antonio Sandoval will present lectures and workshops for the Homenaje al Carnaval de Riosucio (Homage to the Carnival of Riosucio).

Ruben Dario Mejia, master dancer, choreographer, and founding member of FolkCOLOMBIA Musica y Danza and Los Viajeros de la Danza, will present a tertulia to discuss the origins of the carnival and its integration of Black African, European, and Indigenous people and cultures of the region. As dance co-director for Homenaje al Carnaval de Riosucio, Mr. Dario Mejia will illustrate carnival dances and music through live demonstrations, performance, and video.

Ramiro Antonio Sandoval, artistic director of Homenaje al Carnaval de Riosucio, will conduct a hands-on workshop. Mr. Sandoval will provide a practical lecture on the use of masks and the use of space for dancers and actors participating in the July 20th event. Joined by maskmaker Domingo Ramos, Mr. Sandoval will lead attendees through the discovery of the organic-mask genesis and the body of the man-made mask. Participants will take part in the modification of masks to conform to cultural themes explored in the Carnaval de Riosucio.
