The Johnathan Lowery Sextet is an ensemble combining musicians steeped in the languages of jazz and classical music, with roots in Brazilian Forró, Samba, and Bossa Nova. The program will include original music by members of the band as well as arrangements of repertoire by Egberto Gismonti, Gustavo Leguizamón, and Forro in the Dark.

John Lowery: Originally from Saratoga Springs NY, music educator, saxophonist and woodwind specialist Johnathan Lowery has performed extensively throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia. In addition to performing and touring with jazz ensembles, Broadway musicals – HAIR [Revival, National Tour], The Grinch Who Stole Christmas [National Tour], and Grease das Musical [European Tour], Johnathan also freelances as a jazz and contemporary classical musician in New York City. In the summers, he is a faculty member at the Eastern U.S. Music Camp at Colgate University where he contributes as a music educator and clinician. Johnathan graduated from the Eastman School of Music with Bachelor’s degrees in Music Education, and Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media with a saxophone concentration.
Sergio Krakowksi: Born on December 18th 1979, Sergio dedicated his whole life to the Pandeiro, also known as the Brazilian Tambourine. A complete “hand drum kit”, this instrument has always been considered a symbol of Brazilian Music and Culture. Crossing whatever national and cultural barrier, Sergio made this instrument a possible tool in various musical genres, from the Choro, the fundament of Brazilian Music, to Jazz, Contemporary and Electronic Music. In twenty years of career, Sergio Krakowski has shared the stage with artists such as Maria Bethânia, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Lionel Loueke, Donny McCaslin, Anat Cohen, David Binney, Edmar Castañeda, Cyro Baptista, Gregoire Maret, Tigran Hamasyan, Dan Weiss, Miles Okazaki, John Escreet, Nate Wood, Lenine, Chico César, David Linx, Chano Domínguez, Maria João, Mario Laginha, Nelson Veras, Yamandú Costa and Hamilton de Holanda. In June 2013, Sergio moved to New York and got involved in many musical projects, recorded on the album “Anacapa” by David Binney, joined Edmar Castañeda’s World Music Ensemble, created a duo project with Cyro Baptista that played at the legendary experimental music headquarter, The Stone, and joined the Choro Aventuroso, Anat Cohen's Brazilian music band that performed in NYC's most prestigious venues such as the Jazz at Lincoln Center, the 54 Below, and outside the US, at the Umbria Winter Jazz Festival.
Reuben Allen: Whether leading a jazz piano trio or composing for the concert stage and film, Reuben is an adept story teller, drawing listeners into the unique experience of every piece. His compositions and arrangements have been performed by Kenny Barron at the Village Vanguard, the Navy Commodores Jazz Ensemble, and the Eastman Saxophone Project. Reuben's work draws upon a wide variety of musical languages including jazz, classical, and Afro-Cuban and Brazilian. His string quartet arrangement of Aaron Copland’s Hoe Down was performed in Statuary Hall following the Inauguration of President Obama in 2013. Reuben has been honored to share the stage with Wynton Marsalis, Dianne Reeves, Bernard Purdie, and Bob Brookmeyer and has performed at the Torino and Stanford Jazz Festivals as well as the The Blue Note and Dizzy's Club in New York City. Fortunate to grow up in a family of artists and art appreciators, Reuben’s musical studies accelerated at the age of thirteen upon discovering his parents jazz record collection. After earning Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Eastman School of Music and an Artist Diploma from Juilliard, he lives in New York where he is an active performer, composer, and educator.
Jeonglim Yang: Acoustic and electric bassist Lim Yang has marked her distinctive and unique performing style in New York city and Massachusetts since 2007, when she started studying at Berklee college of music as a full scholarship recipient. Not only Yang has gained her recognition from performing with Tim Berne, Chris Speed, Oscar Noriega, Mary Halvorson, Adam Kolker, Billy Mintz and many more in NYC recent years, but also her own leader work has been highly expected among critics and fans. Yang currently featured on numerous albums on major record label and her debut album from fresh sound new talent is due to be released in 2017. Yang has performed at the Blue Not Jazz Club nyc, New Orleans Jazz Festival, WGBO-FM radio station, international Panama Jazz Festival, Siena Jazz Festival in Italy, The Lincoln Center.
