In 1974, Bernardo Palombo was invited to the Dominican Republic to perform at a festival, Siete Dias Con El Pueblo (Seven Days with the People), that was organized by the worker’s union, the CGT (Confederación General de Trabajadores).
En 1974, Bernardo Palombo fue invitado a la República Dominicana a tocar en un festival, Siete Días con el Pueblo, organizado por la CGT (Confederación General de Trabajadores), un sindicato de organizaciones obreras.
After the festival, the organizers asked Palombo to create LP’s in New York from the recordings that were made during the festival that they could use to raise money and awareness about the music, poetry and concerns that were being discussed during this seminal event.
Después del festival, sus organizadores le pidieron a Bernardo que produjera en Nueva York uno o mas albums con la música grabada durante el festival, elepés (LPs o discos de larga duración) para recaudar fondos para la CGT y para hacer conocer al mundo la dimensión musical, poética y política que tuvo Siete Dias.

This was the festival where Silvio Rodriguez and Noel Nicola performed for a large international audience for the first time. Silvio had been doing a kind of volunteer work, singing in Angola and went to the D.R. where he found a Latin American audience who knew and appreciated his songs. Noel Nicola, Silvio's companion in “trova” and writer of the Manifesto of the "Nueva Trova" Cubana, sang his María del Carmen in the Casa de Teatro among others of his works, that today are considered classics of latinamerican song. Fragments of this concert were what made the first Americanto LP and the master was sent to the Dominican Republic and reproduced there.
Fue en ese festival donde Silvio Rodriguez y Noel Nicola por primera vez presentaron sus canciones a una audiencia multitudinaria. Silvio había estado en Angola como voluntario cantando allí pero fue en D.R. donde una audiencia latino americana conoció y aplaudió sus canciones. Noel Nicola, compañero de trova de Silvio y redactor del manifiesto da la nueva trova cubana, hizo cantar a la audiencia de Casa de Teatro su María del Carmen y otras canciones que hoy son clásicos de la canción latinoamericana. Fragmentos de ese concierto crearon el primer LP, cuyo “master” fue mandado a Republica Dominicana y allí reproducido.

The other, was a compilation of the best performances of the festival. Until now, it was lost. Bernardo was convinced that he had sent the masters and had not kept a copy. In the process of organizing materials for this blog, we found the unmastered reel-to-reel tapes!
Otro fue una compilación de diferentes interpretes. Hasta ahora, esta colección estaba perdida. Bernardo estaba convencido de que él envió los másteres al sindicato sin haber guardado una copia propia. Mientras que organizábamos los materiales de este blog, ¡encontramos las cintas originales!

"Del Encuentro": Domincan groups of “The New Song” (Expresion Joven, Nueva Forma, Altavoz, Convite, la Rondalla Universitaria) singing the song of “Seven Days”, its full title: “Encuentro Internacional de la Nueva Canción".

Jonny Ventura y su Combo, "Mamá Tingó"
Jonny Ventura y Su Combo (a legend of music and politics. He later served as mayor of Santo Domingo) sing to Mamá Tingó, a campesino leader and organizer that was killed days before the festival. He explains here that they recorded the song and the proceeds from that recording were going to the family of Mama Tingó.
Jonny Ventura y Su Combo (una leyenda de la música y la política Dominicana. Quien fuera eventualmente alcalde de Santo Domingo) canta una canción para Mamá Tingó, una líder campesina asesinada días antes del festival.
"El Topo", Antonio Cabán Vale
El Topo, "Manos Del Campo": El Topo. For many, Antonio Cabán Vale is one of the most important latinamerican composers. His songs are sang by many generations of Puerto Ricans in PR and here in the US. His “Verde Luz” is like the unofficial national anthem of the island. Here he is singing to the hands of the children working in the countryside of Cuba.
El Topo, Manos Del Campo: El Topo, Antonio Cabán Vale, considerados por muchos uno de los compositores mas importantes de América Latina. En Puerto Rico y Los Estados Unidos viejos y jóvenes conocen y cantan sus canciones. Aquí canta a las manos de los niños que cosechan frutas en el campo cubano
El Topo, "Antonia": El Topo’s song for Antonia is about Antonia Martinez who was a student at the University of Rio Piedras in Puerto Rico when she was killed by a policeman. El Topo at that time was a member of “Guajana”, a collective of poets and writers. After this incident, El Topo decided to start singing his poetry to make it more accesible and for a wider audience.
El Topo, "Antonia": La canción por Antonia del Topo se refiere a Antonia Martinez, una estudiante puertorriqueña que fue asesinada durante una demostración estudiantil en Rio Piedras. A ese momento, El Topo era conocido como miembro de la revista de poesía “Guajana”, un colectivo de poesia. Después de este incidente, El Topo empezó a cantar su poesía haciéndola mas accesible a una mayor audiencia.
Víctor Manuel
Victor Manuel, "La Canción del Oro": Victor Manuel and Ana Belén were the representatives of Spain, together with Pi de la Serra who sang in Catalán from his native Barcelona. Victor Manuel is known all over the world as a musician and actor. In “Cancion del Oro” he sings sarcastic verses about gold, money and greed.
Victor Manuel, "La Canción del Oro": Los representantes de España fueron Victor Manuel y Ana Belén juntos con Pi de la Serra, quien cantó en catalán. Victor Manuel es una figura reconocida internacionalmente como músico y actor. En la “Cancion del Oro” él canta sarcásticamente sobre el dinero, el poder, y codicia.
When Victor Manuel sang “No Quiero ser Militar” (“I Don’t Want to be Military”) many of the police and soldiers present became emotional; they were immediately replaced by thier superiors for this “breach” of behavior. In this song a father tells his son all the professions he wishes both he and his son to be, except in the military because he does not want to kill children in Vietnam.
Cuando Victor Manuel cantó “No Quiero ser Militar”, la canción impactó emocionalmente a algunos soldados y también policías; quienes fueron relevados por sus superiores. En este canción un padre menciona las profesiones que quisiera para el y su hijo, excepto la de militar porque no quiere ir a matar niños en Vietnam.

Expresión Joven, "Está llegando la hora" ("The Time has Come"): Founded in 1972, Expresión Joven, is one of the pioneer groups of “Nueva Canción” in the Dominican Republic. They were, together with the CGT, organizers of the event [7days].

Los Guaraguaos
Los Guaraguaos were one of the most famous groups of Venezuela. Most of their repertory is based in songs by Alí Primera: “the Cardboard Houses”, “No Basta Rezar”. Here they sing “Si se calla el Cantor” (If The Singer Shuts Up), written by Argentinian, Horacio Guarany.
El famoso grupo venezolano, Los Guaraguaos, canta una de las canciones mas conocidas en aquella época. “Si se calla el Cantor”, escrita por Horacio Guarany, Los Guarguaos popularizaron y se hicieron populares con las canciones de Ali Primera
Noel Nicola
Noel Nicola, "26": July 26 is to the Cuban Revolution what July 4th is to the US, or May 5 (Cinco de Mayo), is to Mexico. It is the anniversary that commemorates the assault to Moncada Barracks attacked by Fidel. The song “26” by Noel Nicola is dedicated to the heros and those who lost their lives on that day.
Noel Nicola canta “26”, su cancion homenaje al asalto del cuartel Moncada. El 26 de julio es el dia que celebra la revolución cubana como el de su aniversario mas importante.
Roberto Darvin
Roberto Darvin, "Guitarra": (lyrics from a poem by Nicolás Guillen) Originally from Uruguay, Roberto Darvin is from a generation that includes Daniel Viglietti, Los Olimareños, Alfredo Zitarosa. He set to music many Latinamerican poets. Here he sings a poem by Cuban Nicolas Guillen called “Guitarra” that he set to music and a poem by the author of El Nuevo Cancionero, Armando Tejada Gomez "Coplera del Prisioneros" ("Prisoners Verses").
Roberto Darvin canta “Guitarra” un poema de Nicolas Guillen al cual Darvin musicalizo. Originario de Uruguay es de la misma generación y escuela de Daniel Viglietti, Alfredo Zitarosa, Los Olimareños. Aquí tambein canta “Coplera del prisionero” de Armando Tejada Gomez.
Guadalupe Trigo
Guadalupe Trigo : a seminal Mexican composer. His song classic song "Mi Ciudad" (My City) about his native Mexico was presented at the festival. And in the following recording he sings a song by Cuban, Pablo Milanes, "Compañero Presidente Ho Chi Min", a song for the Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Min about his example of human dignity.
Guadalupe Trigo: Cuyo canción “Mi Cuidad” a su Mexico natal es un clásico que presentó en el festival. En esta grabación canta una canción de cubano Pablo Milanes “Compañero Presidente Ho Chi Min” dedicada al líder vietnamita, Ho Chi Min.
Grupo Nueva Forma
Grupo Nueva Forma included many popular soloists such as Sonia Silvestre and Victor Victor. They were a part of the Dominican groups that particpated in the events. The following song is called "La Canción Debe Ser" ("the Song Must Be").
El Grupo Nueva Forma incluía durante el festival solistas ya conocidos en Republica Dominicana, como Sonia Silvestre y Victor Victor. El numero que interpretan es “La cancion debe ser”.
